It was a conflict between Great Britain and its American colonies. Great Britain had developed close relations with many Native nations through trade. These Native groups occupied territory that was under dispute as the American Colonies wanted it for settlement expansion westward. The Natives joined forces with Britain in an attempt to maintain their lands south of the Great Lakes.

Native groups that allied with Britain were from the Six Nations of the Haudenosaunee also known as the Iroquois Confederacy. They included warriors from Mohawk, Cayuga, Onondaga, Seneca, Oneida and Tuscarora Nations. Two of the Mohawk leaders were John Deseronto and Joseph Brant.

After Britain’s defeat, it ceded all of ‘its’ territory south of Canada to the new Colonial Government in terms of the Treaty of Paris of 1783. Britain was willing to give away this land because it thought that the new colonies would be a more favourable trading partner in future due to their anticipated rapid growth in population. It was correct.

The Native groups were not included in the treaty negotiations, and they believed they had never relinquished it to Britain. The settlement included land almost completely occupied by the Six Nations. Negotiations for territory between Britain and the Native Nations were misleading as they obscured the distinction between “ownership” of the land and “sovereignty” over it.

Britain worked to resettle its Native Allies (Loyalists) in Canada and provide some compensation for lands they lost in the new United States. This land had previously been relinquished by the Mississauga Ojibwa Nation in May 1784. The British Crown had purchased the land from the Mississaugas per the “Between the Lakes Treaty” of December 7, 1792.
